.beat

‘BEAT is a collaborative work by Olive Barrett and Louise Marlborough

"The mundane repetition, the frustration and anxiety that individuals experience on a daily basis is echoed in our piece. Technology (TV, gaming, internet, music etc.) in all its forms can be a means of escapism from the everyday and our piece incorporates some of these technologies. However, connecting with technology seems to isolate and disconnect individuals from each other even more and leaves us detached and vacant."

Olive Barrett was born in 1975 in Cashel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland. After completing a Fetac in Art and Design she went on to study at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. She graduated in 1998 with a BA in textile Design. In 2005 she returned to The National College of Art and Design to complete a Higher Diploma in Art and design Education.
Barrett has combined her talents in many areas and works in media including painting, textiles d moving image. Over a 14 year period Barrett has exhibited both nationally and ternationally including solo shows, selected group exhibitions and public art projects. Last year she received a commendation for her part in the Jameson Film Festival (trailer competition).

Louise Marlborough was born in Dublin in 1976. She graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin with an Honours Degree in Fine Art, Sculpture. In 2000 she completed a Certificate in Professional Photographic Practice at the London College of Printing.
In 1999 Marlborough was granted two awards from the Arts Council in Ireland. Marlborough has exhibited for over ten years now and includes solo shows, a two-person show

jol thomson

Jol Thomson is an artist and musician living and working in Toronto, Canada.
He works with audio, video, and in live performance integrating one or both of these elements.
Here rectangleBox presents 3 recent video works:

-No pronoun-
As an investigation of my self, is meant to be a sort of self portrait;
an attempt at extending internal life and conflicts onto a video screen.
Various conflicts are presented formally: the juxtaposition between analogue video format and the new digital format creates a tension between the text and the imagery.
A diatribe on the lack of connectedness among the ‘us’, the ‘our’, the ‘we’.

-FLASHBACK-
A structuralist video - the sound and abstraction that is personal memory.
The video illuminates its own medium both instrumentally and philosophically, showing how memory is an abstraction and how we remember things incorrectly.

-Untitled(butcher)-
(In Collaboration with danielle Williams)
Exploring the layers of linguistic complexity involved in the mere act of trying to communicate. . . arbitrary definitions become a filter that both provide and prevent access to meaning.

Teva Chonon

Pouf!

Pouf! is one in a series of four video installations by Auckland artist Teva Chonon.

‘This work embraces the mundane, as it forms itself through a repetitive action. At the same time the video uncovers a seductive quality that draws the viewer into this surrealistic environment. A certain playfulness is established in these oppositions- against the structure of the video picture. A conflicting sense of enchantment and disenchantment with reality is surfacing.’
